the lethal gene in guinea pigs

Why not to breed roans. We've sadly learned the hard way, we were told that perhaps this pairing of Dingo and Smokey might not go well. We were told Dingo could possibly be a roan. We knew Smokey was a Roan but we weren't sure that Dingo was. The birth of the three piggies have indeed proven that they are both roans.

This is Buddy. He's just over three weeks old, striving and doing very well, he doesn't have any eye sight as he was the only pink eyed baby out of the trio. One other baby was born blind in one eye. I just gave Buddy a bath as he was getting very grubby looking. He still has some yellow on him which I'll bath off in the next week or so.

Out of the three babies we suspect two are lethals. I don't know if you can get part lethal however the one was born blind in one eye has white on him mixed with his other colors confirming him as roan. Apart from being small they are thriving. Buddy will be kept with us safe with a  friend we'll pair him up with for company only.

We are discontinuing the roan breeding now we know for certain. The other two are on waiting lists for a lovely couple who wanted a special pair so they will go as siblings.

I am trying to establish a new breed by breeding rex and texel. So hopefully from now on my plan will go ahead.

Enjoy Buddy!
hugs happy Friday
